Annyeong haseyo, travel adventurers! I’m your guide, coming to you from Athens village at NYS.
I feel such deep gratitude to be writing from this location today. This village is truly built for the Hudson River. Its geography is stunning. A lush green canopy surrounds the entire area. Furthermore, the village sits right on the edge of the majestic Hudson River.
While the village does not have a public swimming area, it offers incredible ways to engage with the water. You will find convenient water docks designed for canoes and kayaking. Additionally, a regular ferry service connects us to the other side of the river.
But why should you visit? Let me explain three unique things that make a trip to Athens, NY, absolutely worthy.
1. Step Back in Time with Living History
Athens is home to remarkable structural landmarks that date back centuries. First, you can visit the Jan Van Loon House, built in 1706. It is one of the oldest surviving houses in New York State. This home marks the original Dutch settlement of Loonenburgh.
Just up the street, you will find the Albertus Van Loon House, which was built in 1724. These stone homes offer a rare glimpse into the early colonial history of the Hudson Valley.
With this year 2026, we have the ability to do the virtual tour for these two since they are still private property even they are the historical landmark.
2. The Majestic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse
Another standout feature is the iconic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse. When you take the ferry, the boat pauses right alongside this historic structure.
This lighthouse was historically vital for guiding ships safely through the deep-water shipping channel of the Hudson River, helping vessels navigate the river’s treacherous bends and the Middle Ground Flats.
Onboard docents often share stories about the maritime history of the lightkeepers. Moreover, the area around the lighthouse is a vibrant ecosystem. You might even spot nesting bald eagles on the nearby Middle Ground Flats. It is a perfect blend of history and nature.
3. The Perfect “Eco-Water” Transit Loop
Finally, the ease of travel here is a major draw. Athens is part of a “multi-modal transit framework”. This means you can visit without ever needing a car.
You can take an Amtrak train from NYC to the city of Hudson. Then, you simply hop on the Hudson Ferry Co. vessel to cross the water to Athens Riverfront Park. This seamless loop allows you to enjoy the scenery as an active part of your trip. It turns the journey itself into a healing experience.
Beyond these highlights, the village offers a quiet, low-traffic atmosphere. It is the perfect place to sit down for a relaxing waterfront lunch.
I hope you join us soon in Athens. Happy travels!
